4 Steps to take when resigning from your job

As part of my role as a recruiter i regularly support people I work with through the process of handing in their resignation.

Not everyone that leaves a role is unhappy or has negative feelings towards their current employers.

It is often just the case that a different opportunity has come along which is better suited to someones personal situation and career, which could be for a variety of reasons.

Naturally, is not uncommon in situations where that is the case to have feelings of guilt and for the process of handing in your resignation to be pretty nerve wracking and stressful.

I usually advise the following steps:-

🗣 Speak to your boss first:-
If possible, it is always courteous to speak to your line manager or boss in private and in person prior to handing in your written notice to the relevant HR contact. This allows for the opportunity to let them know of your intention to hand in your notice and discuss your decision with them.

✍️Submit your intention to resign in writing:-
Write a short letter of Resignation in advance confirming you are resigning from the position.

An exaample of a resignation template letter may be:-

" Please accept this letter as formal notice that I will be resigning from my position as ........In accordance with my notice period, my final day will be [date of last day]. I would like to thank (your bosses name) and the company for the support and opportunities you have provided me with during my time with the company"

The resignation letter does not have to go into the details as to why you are resigning or to air any grievance (save that for any exit interviews) or details of where you are moving to etc.

😲Tell your team:-
Inform your close Colleagues that you are moving on and break the news to them.

😴Continue to give your best efforts:-
Continue to work to the best of your ability throughout your notice period and help with any handovers, interview processes etc.

As tempting as it may be to metaphorically put your feet up once you hand in your notice you should always try and not leave people in the lurch and leave on good terms.

There are other issues that may arise or things to consider and sometimes people are just downright awkward, difficult or unpleasant and that is a real shame.

However, If you try and maintain integrity and professionalism, the vast majority of time bridges will not be burnt and you will be able to maintain good relationships and move on with everyones best wishes.
