“I feel bad leaving my team and think my boss will be annoyed”
I hear variations of the above from time to time as a recruiter.
But the truth is, changing jobs isn’t personal.
It’s a career decision, not a betrayal.
Everyone has to think about:
✅ Being rewarded well for their work
✅ Growth opportunities
✅ Career progression
✅ Skills development
✅ Long-term trajectory
The right move isn’t about leaving people behind or being disloyal—it’s about thinking of the above factors and moving yourself forward.
Unfortunately, there is the occasional petulant partner or manager you hear of that take it personally, but on the whole good firms understand the above
It is nice to see regular posts on here about people moving on to pastures new and old colleagues, partners or bosses wishing people well.
Genuinely nice colleagues should celebrate your growth, even if it means saying goodbye.
And those that don't are not worth worrying about.
Your career is yours to shape. Don’t let misguided loyalty to a role or a firm stop you from creating the future you want.
