Toxic working Cultures

A beanbag and some free apples will not fix the toxic culture of a business.

In as much as a good benefits package is key to recruiting and retaining people, a good workplace culture is more vital.

In my experience from a recruitment perspective a bad culture within a firm will always come back round and cause issues.

If you are suffering from a retention or recruitment issue it could it be that your culture is not as good as you would like to think it is?

The culture of your firm is the environment day to day that is created for people at all levels within the business and is the sum of a companies traditions, interactions, attitudes, values and day to day behaviours.

I talk regularly to candidates and law firm clients about what makes a good culture within a firm and the following things usually crop up :-

????High levels of trust.
????Opportunity for continual training opportunities leading to growth and advancement opportunities.
????Approachable, supportive and responsive colleagues at all levels of the firm (with no exceptions).
????Respecting people at ALL levels within the business and appreciating their worth to the business.
????Recognition and celebration of success and achievements.
????Feeling able to own up to mistakes.
????A friendly team where people feel and part of a supportive group.
????A place where ideas can be shared by anyone and are given genuine consideration.
????Promotion of a healthy work-life balance.
????Making sure new people you hire will fit into the team and then onboarding them properly.

A lot of firms I recruit for successfully create a really positive culture where people enjoy their work and feel supported and happy within their roles.

They say they have a good culture and are able to demonstrate this through results and how they operate. They can point to ways in which they invest and make decisions with their culture at the heart of their decision making.

This leads to increased productivity and a lower turnover of staff and it is no surprise these companies manage to recruit talented people a lot easier than their counterparts who have it as an afterthought.
